Dr. Lee Artz presents: How to Stage a Coup! Media, Politics, and Interventions in Bolivia.

Open University of the Left welcomes back Dr. Lee Artz. Historically whenever progressive, populist parties win democratic elections in Latin America, land reform and improvements in labor rights, health care, and education have followed. Such movements toward social justice and democracy threaten domestic and global capitalist interests, which invariably launch campaigns of sabotage, disruption, propaganda, and violence.

The November coup in Bolivia, following the re-election of President Evo Morales and other Movement for Socialism candidates. is the most recent collaboration between domestic elites and the US government subverting democracy and indigenous rights. This talk summarizes the gains under Morales government. US media framing of events will then be fact-checked to highlight how the coup was organized and justified to the public.

Lee Artz is Professor of Media Studies and the Director, Center for Global Studies at Purdue University Northwest.

Rich Whitney presents: Making America Care Again: Why Americans Should Oppose War.
War is “out of sight, out of mind” to most Americans most of the time. Yet, day after day, the U.S. government is murdering people abroad while depriving our communities of badly needed resources at home. This presentation by peace activist Rich Whitney cuts through the disinformation about U.S. foreign policy that trivializes war. It will remind viewers of the horrific consequences of war abroad and at home, the illegality of war, the real economic drivers of war– and the crucial importance of engaging in a renewed struggle against war and the system that perpetuates it.
Rich Whitney is an attorney from Carbondale, Illinois, now working as an appellate public defender. He is a founding member of the Illinois Green Party and served as the Party’s first candidate for Governor of Illinois in 2006 winning over 360,000 votes. His current activist roles include serving as co-chair of the Illinois Green Party and as an active participant in the Green Party Peace Action Committee, the Chicago Committee Against War and Racism and he is also active in several other progressive organizations.

Vincent Emanuele presents: The 2020 Elections & Left Wing Activism: Building Electoral Majorities & Radical Social Movements

Open University of the Left welcomes back Vincent Emanuele.. The 2020 elections are upon us and millions of people throughout the United States will get involved with politics for the very first time. Many leftists refuse to participate in electoral projects even local efforts, but especially and understandably campaigns for President of the United States. This cycle however, offers exciting and different opportunities: among them is the possibility of a Bernie Sanders Presidency and the critical opportunity to expose millions of people, especially young people, to politics outside the realm of Neoliberalism.
Additionally, national and international political efforts must be connected to local organizing projects. Here, Emanuele has a front row seat to how these dynamics play out in the real world as he currently works with two organizations, Organized and United Residents of Michigan City (OURMC), a local Indiana community organizing body focused on single-issue and electoral campaigns, and political education, and a co-founder of Political Art Roots and Culture (PARC), a community-cultural center that provides an affordable and/or free space for organizers, artists, and everyday people who seek community, creativity, and political resistance.

Vincent Emanuele is a writer, community organizer and former Marine Corps combat veteran. He has been working with left wing political projects, electoral campaigns, and social movements since 2006. Vincent’s writings have appeared in Z Communications, CounterPunch, Truthout, teleSUR English and AlterNet. He formerly hosted the weekly radio program “Meditations and Molotovs” on the Progressive Radio Network. Vince is the co-founder of P.A.R.C.
He is a former board member of Iraq Veterans Against the War and Veterans for Peace. He is a member of the National Writers Union, UAW local 1981.
